As we choses to place a foreign object in our body like a heart pace maker, heart stent, artificial joint or dental implant, then we should put into consideration that these life changing medical devices have to be checked every while and then.
I can understand that some patients could miss scaling and polishing follow up visit for any reason, but missing dental implant follow up has dramatic effect on the life time of this implant.
Not to mention that implant procedure cost, took multiple visits and very precise, ignoring it for years and years will be a big loss!!
Simple dental x-ray & checkup won’t last more than 15 minutes is all what is needed to keep this implant in good condition. Slight bone loss, losing of the crown , bleeding gum or even implant fracture ,all can be detected early, and of course the earlier the better!
As many patients asks for how long this dental implant will last ,studies had shown and confirm more than 10-15 years life time but they will also confirm the importance of follow up visits .
Many dental clinics even mentioned it in the consent form, that failure to come on follow up visits may result in losing this implant.
