Root canal treatment, Truth and Myth

Root canal treatment, Truth and Myth

Root canal Treatment as we call it in dentistry is a procedure might be needed for many reasons; the most common reason would be deeper decay reaching the root canal of the tooth/ or the heart of the tooth as some refer to, and we wouldn’t be left with any other options to save the tooth and preserve it before carrying out the root canal treatment, the second reason could be following a trauma to the teeth, whether a direct one fracturing the tooth or an indirect one to the teeth bearing area of the face, causing disturbances to the blood flow inside the tooth.

What is a root canal treatment?

The procedure of the root canal treatment is always done painlessly, as we start by numbing the area of the referred tooth, and starting to clean the decay or fractured part of the tooth, reaching out to the tooth pulp/ or the root canals as they are known of. followed by disinfecting them and filling them back to prevent any further reaccumulation of micro/organisms into the canals.
Most of the patients in the old days used to try to avoid having a root canal treated for many myths related to the subject; as they would imagine it would be a severely painful process, or that they would end up losing the tooth anyways and thus they used to choose to remove the tooth instead of going through the procedure, in fact, I consider root canal treatment is one of the most important dental services that could help a patient preserve the tooth if it was carried out properly removing the source of the infection and restoring the tooth back to function in comparison to a completely sound tooth structure.

What to expect during and after the Root canal treatment dental visit?

-Usually, Root canal treatment nowadays is carried out in a single visit, except when it’s needed to add more visits, depending on each clinical situation and signs.

-The visit starts by taking Xrays to the tooth, applying Local anesthetic agents to carry out the procedure completely painlessly.
-Once the Root canal treatment is done, the tooth is restored back with a cosmetic dental filling unless a crown, inlay, or an inlay ( which are most of the cases needed to restore the previously lost tooth structure leading to the root canal treatment ).
-All the levels of pain are usually controlled completely during the procedure itself and afterward.
